Shamren Fletcher opened the meeting and welcomed everyone. A motion was made to waive reading the minutes from the April meeting. The motion was seconded. The motion passed. Everyone was reminded to be sure to sign in.
Huntington Learning Center – Katie Sutton & Manuel Bramao:
Huntington is a private company founded 25 years ago. They are certified as a school to help Kindergarten children through adults. There are 300 centers nationally. All their teachers are certified. There are programs to prepare children for various tests, including SAT’s and other private school tests. Huntington has programs to help improve children with phonics skills and also enrichment to make sure they stay on grade level. They held two drawings; Ms. Wilkins and Sigrid Houston were the winners.
Market Day – Jackie Gibson:
The goal with market day is to assist schools and the community to raise funds. This is a monthly program. The food is delivered, once a month, on the sale day. This is restaurant quality food. Credit cards are not accepted. Purchases must be paid for by cash, check or money order. The profit check will come a couple of weeks after the sale. Market Day provides a cashier at the sale. They are responsible for collecting bounced /returned checks. The program can either follow the school year or follow a twelve-month program. Bonus days are also offered, aside from the regular Market Day sale. They also offer programs for school supplies where they work off of our school list. They will provide quotes. Comparable schools have seen a $600 to $700 profit each month from this fundraiser. One to two volunteers are needed to help with this each month.
Helen McShane (Teacher Rep):
She wanted to thank the PTA for everything they are doing for the teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week. They have never had a week like this. Everyone really liked the special song and the roses. Mrs. Frantz was elected Teacher of the Year from Sam’s Club. The school will receive $1000 from this. The kids really enjoyed Donuts for Dad. Everyone really liked the Arts Excel evening at the last PTA meeting. Hopefully next year we can have a dedicated evening for this. The teachers had a great time at the ballgame.
Katrina Washington (Teacher Rep):
Everything is coming along for Multi-Cultural day. Each class will have their own booth on this day. It is estimated that the cost of this will be around $600. The PTA may be able to help with some of the costs.
Terri Filbert (Principal’s Report):
She agreed with Helen McShane that Teacher Appreciation Week has truly been a special week. Thank you to the PTA for everything. June 17th is the last day of school. Mr. Russell is working on the air conditioner.
Michael Goldsmith (Treasurer):
There are approximately $10,000 in expenses to be paid this year. Cotton Threads was successful and we are still getting some money in from Innisbrook. We made about $1500 on Common Threads. Michael suggests that we take the cultural program money in the budget to offset some of the other line items. Possibly some of this can be used for Multi-Cultural Day. Mrs. Filbert may be able to take some funds from the general fund to also help with that. Michael recommends that anyone who is planning anything for next year to come up with a plan and present your budget. This will help us get everything in place for next year. Each PTA meeting costs approximately $200 for dinner and babysitting. Kudos to Dave Green for the Fruit Express, he tried to do his best in spite of the weather and some dry fruit issues. We will need someone to step up next year to learn the Fruit Express and help take over. Next year will be Dave, Karen and Barbara’s last year. We could probably make more money if someone would help market and push fruit sales. It was brought up about possibly combining Market Day with the Fruit Express days. Dave sends out approximately 1500 cards a month and about 675 order fruit.
Stewart Richardson (Overcrowding Committee):
The first group meeting is scheduled for May 11th. Anyone who wants to get involved, please contact Stewart or Amie Bell. A press release was sent out and we did get a response from Dutch Rupersberger.
Jodi Marlow (for Charlene Simonds – Nominating Committee):
Jodi announced the nominations for next year:
President – Shamren Fletcher 1st Vice President – Barbara Roman
2nd Vice President – Mary Cialella-Smith Treasurer – Michael Goldsmith
Recording Secretary – Lynn Link Corresponding Secretary – Lori Ditto
Shamren Fletcher (President):
Should we possibly get involved with the Reisterstown Festival and get a booth? This year it is scheduled for September 11th and 12th. We will get more details regarding this before a decision is made. Mrs. Littman has done a phenomenal job for The First Day Celebration. We want the parents to be involved. Hopefully, we can accommodate the pre-school children, so those parents can attend. Parking still needs to be worked out. We could possibly run some shuttle buses. Lauretta Baseman volunteered to help with the sign out front. Back to School Night may not be the traditional night this coming year. We need to do something for those parents who may not be able to come to the First Day Celebration. As far as the Market Day supply box, we will get an estimate and then send out a flyer to see how many parents would be interested.
Next Meeting:
The next PTA meeting is scheduled for June 3, 2004 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Dinner will be from 6:00 to 6:30.
Adjournment:
The meeting was adjourned at 8:40 pm.
